SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM AND PUBLIC CONFERENCE ON EXOPLANETS
From June 29th to July 3rd, 2015, an international symposium dedicated to planets and brown dwarfs will take place at the Institut d'astrophysique de Paris. During this symposium, the IAP and the UPMC have organized a public talk on the diversity of exoplanets. It will be given on the evening of Tuesday, June 30th, by Didier Queloz, co-discoverer of the first exoplanet in 1995. Everyone is welcome.
The year 2015 marks the twentieth anniversary of the discovery of the first planet in orbit around a star other than the Sun. Since then, hundreds of other extrasolar planets (or exoplanets) have been detected and studied, revealing a particularly large diversity. These discoveries have led to considerable advancement of research on this topic, both from the observational techniques that allow us to detect and characterize these celestial bodies, and from theories and models of their formation and evolution.
The 31th international symposium of the IAP will be dedicated to these topics. Entitled "From Super-Earths to Brown Dwarfs: Who's Who?", it will gather more than one hundred researchers from around the world who will present and discuss their latest results. One of the goals of this symposium will be to better understand the diversity of objects discovered during the past twenty years. These range from earth-like planets to gaseous, giant planets like Jupiter, and even up to the so-called brown dwarfs, or low mass stars. Hence, the question posed in the title is “Who's who?”.
On the occasion of this symposium aimed at professionals only, a public conference will be given in French by Didier Queloz, professor at the Universities of Cambridge and Geneva: "Exoplanètes : la surprenante diversité des autres mondes du cosmos". The public conference will take place on Tuesday, June 30th, 2015 at 7pm in the Farabeuf amphitheater (21 rue de l'école de médecine, Paris). There is no entrance fee (subject to availability).
