Ariel (the Atmospheric remote-sensing infrared exoplanet large-survey mission) is the fourth medium mission of ESA's Cosmic Vision program. Thanks to a simultaneous spectral measurement in visible and infrared, it will allow to build up a catalog of about 1000 exoplanet atmospheres by measuring their composition and atmospheric structure, between the sizes of Jupiter and those intermediate between Neptune and Earth. Ariel uses the technique of transit and eclipse observation when the planet passes in front of or behind its star to measure the small variations of flux on the star observed.
