My current research focuses on galaxy evolution and the physical interpretation of galaxy spectra, from nearby galaxies to the early Universe. I am a member of the JWST/NIRSpec Instrument Science Team and am actively involved in the scientific exploitation of JWST observations.

I have long worked on the development of spectral models for stellar populations and nebular emission. Stellar population models developed with Gustavo Bruzual are available from this website, and grids of nebular emission from H II regions and AGN narrow-line regions are available here. These models form much of the physical basis of the spectral-analysis tools MAGPHYS (Multi-wavelength Analysis of Galaxy Physical Properties) and BEAGLE (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds), of which I am one of the original developers.

I have been Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded NEOGAL project, carried out with this project team, and of the EC-funded Initial Training Network ELIXIR. These projects developed many of the modelling tools and techniques that underpin my current work on the interpretation of galaxy spectra.
