« Extreme mass ratio inspirals : galactic astrometry to LISA rates »

Stellar orbits around the massive black hole at the center of our galaxy provide a unique local probe of the compact-object population in the Galactic Centre and, consequently, of the sources of millihertz gravitational waves: periapse passages lead to extreme-mass-ratio bursts (EMRBs) while successful captures lead to extreme-mass ration inspirals (EMRIs). In this talk I review the key ingredients required to compute the expected EMRI and EMRB signals for the gravitational wave observatory LISA. I will demonstrate how astrometric limits from the GRAVITY observatory on stellar orbits around the supermassive black hole in the centre of our galaxy can provide critical input for these calculations.
