« Neutron star merger afterglows: Population prospects for the gravitational wave era »

Raphaël Duque
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

I will review some general knowledge from the field of short gamma-ray bursts and describe the recent advances of this field entailed by the historical gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations of the August 17th 2017 neutron star merger. I will then present the current activity of our group concerning population models for the neutron star mergers to be detected and observed during the future science runs of the gravitational interferometer network. We make hypotheses on the role of relativistic jets in these mergers and apply afterglow models inspired by gamma-ray burst science to make predictions on the expected rates and diversity of the mergers to be observed jointly in the gravitational wave and electromagnetic domains. These predictions are an adequate framework to interpret these future observations to gain insight on neutron star mergers, their environments and their link with short gamma-ray bursts.
