« The high-redshift frontier - Chapter 1: Introduction to blobology »

The very first stars and galaxies whose flare ended the dark ages of the Universe and drove cosmic reionization are at the frontier of observability and represent the progenitors of present-day galaxies and large-scale structure. While recent studies have established galaxies at redshifts z > 6 to be highly starbursting systems, their exact physics and nature remain fairely unknown. These sources are intrinsically small, faint and redshifted up to 6 < z < 11 where their rest-frame optical emission features are undetectable by current instrumentation. Nevertheless, several reasonably sized samples of high-redshift objects are now within observational reach.
In this talk, I will walk you through the process and difficulties of detecting and studying these high-redshift (z>6) dropout galaxies in Hubble Space Telescope surveys of strong lensing clusters such as HFF and BUFFALO and how I attempt to push the limits of current instrumentation deeper towards the faintest and most distant galaxies.
