« Gamma-ray burst afterglows: new insight from jet structure »

Raphaël Duque

The jets which produce gamma-ray bursts possess structure: they are composed of a very energetic and relativistic core, surrounded by a sheath of less extreme material. This was spectacularly confirmed by the historic event GRB170817A. Many features of gamma-ray burst afterglows remain to be robustly understood; for example their flares and plateau phases. What if plateaus and flares were purely geometrical effects following from the structuredness and extreme velocities of gamma-ray burst jets?
