« How do we measure distances to galaxies and how can the large scale structure improve them »

Marko Shuntov
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

Improving distance measurements in large imaging surveys is a major challenge to better reveal the distribution of galaxies on a large scale and to link galaxy properties with their environments. But how do we measure distances in the first place? In this edition of YMCA I will walk you through one of the most successful method of determining the distance to a galaxy by observing its colours — the photometric redshift method. We will then go a step further and see how we can improve these distance measurements. I’ll show you how photometric redshifts can be efficiently combined with the cosmic web (CW) extracted from overlapping spectroscopic surveys to improve their accuracy.
