« Galaxy formation in our back yard: the frequency, properties andformation of very young galaxies in the local Universe »

While the cosmic noon of star formation in the Universe occurred at redshift z near 2, hundreds or perhaps thousands of galaxies in the local Universe have doubled their stellar mass in the last Gyr. I will compare the frequencies of such very young galaxies (VYGs) as a function of stellar-mass with derived from 400,000 SDSS spectra, with those obtained from analytical and semi-analytical galaxy formation models, as well as in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. I will show that VYGs in a reliable SDSS subsample show different properties than other star-forming galaxies. I will discuss the respective roles of sudden gas accretion andgas-rich galaxy mergers in building these VYGs.
