| « Leveraging the power of galaxy scaling relations with DESI » |
|
Christoph Saulder |
| While DESI's primary science goal is to measure the expansion rate of the universe using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, the incredible amount of spectra collected by the instrument enables additional cosmological measurements through other probes. The DESI Peculiar Velocity Survey derives redshift-independent distances from galaxy scaling relations, such as the Fundamental Plane and the Tully-Fisher relation, to measure peculiar velocities. This project will deliver the largest peculiar velocity sample ever observed. To obtain the best possible measurements of the strength of gravity via the growth rate of structure from this dataset, we must investigate, in unprecedented detail, biases affecting galaxy scaling relations that were not detectable with previous, smaller datasets. I present results from the DESI Peculiar Velocity Survey using DESI EDR and DR1, along with a brief outlook on what to expect from the ongoing DESI DR2 peculiar velocity key project. |
