« Very high energy emission in gamma-ray bursts »

Lara Nava

Very high energy (VHE, >100 GeV) emission from Gamma-Ray burst (GRBs) has eluded for several years all attempts of detection by Cherenkov telescopes, until the recent detections (either by MAGIC or HESS) of strong VHE radiation from four GRBs. Modeling of the multi-wavelength observations (radio to TeV) as synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton radiation has proven to be successful and opens to the possibility of estimating properties that are usually unconstrained, such as the density of the external medium, the energy of the emitting particles, and the strength of the magnetic field. In this talk I review the present status of observations and interpretation of VHE emission from GRBs, their importance, and the prospects for future detections. Moreover, I will give a brief overview of the GRB observed on October 9th 2022, the brightest ever detected and with photon energies >~ 10 TeV observed by LHAASO.
