The young and nearby star ß Pictoris is surrounded by an debris disk
composed of dust and gas known to host a myriad evaporating exocomets, planetesimals and at least one planet. Observations of debris disks, such as the one surrounding ß Pictoris, are important as they provide us with clues about the mechanisms of planet formation. The analysis of the gas in the disk allows us to directly estimate the physical conditions in the disk such as density, composition, temperature and in some cases bulk velocities, all of which provide important clues to exoplanet formation theories. In my talk I will present new results on measuring the abundance of the key species H, C, N and O in the ß Pictoris gas disk using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. |
