« Modeling the hierarchical evolution of galaxy clusters »

Clusters of galaxies, the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, form via a hierarchical sequence of mergers and accretion of smaller systems. Measurements of their mass function provide tight constraints on various cosmological parameters, complementary to other probes. In order to fully exploit this powerful method it is necessary to develop accurate models for the relations between cluster mass, dominated by dark matter and its observable properties, such as the X-ray luminosity of the intracluster gas and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. In this talk I will present a semi-analytic approach to modeling the hierarchical evolution of galaxy clusters and the scatter in the mass-observable relations.
