Observations of high redshift quasars at z>6 indicate that they harbor supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of a billion solar masses. The formation of such massive objects within the first billion years after the Big Bang is still an enigma. I will discuss various scenarios for the formation of SMBHs with particular emphasis on the direct collapse scenario which has emerged as the most plausible way to assemble high redshift SMBHs. Furthermore, I will discuss the feasibility of this scenario and its implications for the formation of high redshift quasars.
