« Numerical solving of the Vlasov-Poisson system - a few applications »

Dark matter and stars in galaxies can be considered as self-gravitating collisionless fluids that obey a "continuity equation" for their phase-space density: the collisionless Boltzmann equation, or Vlasov equation, and a potential equation accounting for self-gravitation: the Poisson equation. For a system having 3 dimensions in position and 3 in velocity, the Vlasov equation is 6-dimensional, making it cumbersome to solve, and often leading to the use of simplifications such as the common N-body scheme. In this talk, we will discuss a few case problems with a low dimensionality: dark matter haloes in one dimension or with a spherical symmetry. We will present a few properties of the fine structure of these systems.
