The realization that our own `visible' Milky Way (MW) is embedded within a 'dark' halo has been with us for more than half a century. Yet, knowledge of this dark halo is still poor with considerable uncertainty/diversity on the determination of its size, mass or density structure, etc. Knowledge of the velocities of the Dark Matter (DM) particles is even poorer. This lack of knowledge of MW DM impacts our efforts on the direct and indirect detection of DM.
In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to uncover the phase-space of MW DM with an eye towards DM detection experiments. Using the latest GAIA data, along with past observations, we look at observational biases, visible matter-DM degeneracies, etc, to present the tightest constraint on the local DM density to date and the first-ever estimation of the MW DM velocity distribution function from observations. We also show the impact of such determination by starting with pure astrophysics of DM tracers and ending with re-estimates DM exclusion limits.
