"Black hole instabilities and instabilities in supersonic flows"

Many black hole solutions exhibit instabilities, e.g. the super-radiance in the Kerr metric, the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black strings, the black hole laser instability discovered by Corley and Jacobson. Similar instabilities are found in supersonic flows in (quantum) fluids such as Bose condensates. In the seminar we shall focus on the black hole laser instability that we shall fully describe both classically and quantum mechanically. We shall also explain how it is related to the Hawking radiation, and discuss experimental situations where it could be observed.
