"Rotational bar-mode instabilities in relativistic rotating stars"

Stars are naturally rotating and subject to nonaxisymmetric rotational instabilities. There are two different mechanisms and corresponding timescales for bar-mode instabilities. One is the secular instability caused by some dissipative mechanism, like viscosity or gravitational radiation, and the other is the dynamical instability caused by the hydrodynamics of the system. Once the star retain its bar shape for many rotational periods, it emits a quasi-periodic gravitational waves, which will be detected in ground based interferometers. In this talk, I will focus on our new progress in viscosity driven instability in relativistic rotating stars based on the approach of Bonazzola, Frieben, Gourgoulhon (1996), and in the nature of the dynamical bar-mode instability of the rotational core collapse based on the conformally flat 3+1 simulation in general relativity.
