« Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST): toward a new window on the dark universe »

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a 8 meter class telescope with a 3.2 Gigapixel camera covering 10 deg2. It will see its first light in 2020, and it will start a 10 years screening of 1/2 the sky surface over 6 bands in 2023. The full survey of 18,000 deg2 of the southern sky to 27th mag will include > 800 visits for each portion of the visited sky. LSST is specifically designed to explore the physics of dark energy and dark matter. Also its unprecedented combination of sky coverage, cadence, and depth, will allow LSST to attack high-priority scientific questions that are far beyond the reach of any existing or planned facility. In this seminar we will present the LSST project and its status, including:
- a status of its construction and international/French involvement in LSST.
- a few highlight on the LSST science.
- two studies related to the Dark Energy & Dark Matter in the LSST framework:
- the importance of not neglecting electrostatic CCD properties to use the most promising probe in the Dark sector: the lensing.
- interest of supernovae in the next decade, when the lensing & BAO will have reach their full power.
