Résumé / Abstract Seminaire_IAP
« Is the stellar initial mass function (IMF) universal ?  »

Gilles Chabrier
Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (Saint-Genis-Laval, France)

In this talk I will explore our present understanding of the IMF, according to the analytical theory derived by Hennebelle & Chabrier. I will introduce the concept of gravoturbulent fragmentation, and the related turbulent Jeans mass, as opposed to the conventional gravitational fragmentation, and thermal Jeans mass, scenario. I will examine to which extend the IMF predicted by this theory is "universal" or whether it can be different in extreme environments such as the ones encountered in starburst regions or early type galaxies, as suggested by various recent observations.
