We describe the application of modern amplitude techniques to the analytic evaluation of classical gravitational observables. These methods from quantum scattering amplitudes have led to a new point-of-view on the computation of the coalescence of compact binaries in the classical post-Minkowskian expansion. This approach applies to any effective field theory of gravity, and provides a theoretical framework for investigating gravitational physics beyond Einstein's theory of gravity.
