Dark Matters

Rationale

The fields of Astrophysics and Cosmology have been advancing very rapidly in the last several decades thanks to the combination of increasingly powerful observing facilities progressively covering the full electromagnetic spectrum and now expanding into other domains such as cosmic rays, neutrinos and gravitational waves; quasi-exponentially increasing computer power now enabling impressively realistic simulations of the Universe often from the very different quasi-homogeneous conditions of the early Universe; and finally thanks to the innovative ideas of many individuals.

Among these creative individuals, Professor Joseph (Joe) Silk, who currently works at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris, the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the Centre d’Etudes Atomiques at Saclay and the University of Oxford, particularly stands out for his ideas and accomplishments in an impressively wide variety of topics, spanning galaxy formation, cosmology, and the possible detection of dark matter (DM) particles.

The accomplishments of Joe Silk come with an impressive productivity and impact: Dr. Silk has authored or co-authored over 800 articles in refereed journals among which nearly 200 as first author and over 600 as one of the first three authors, among which 3 have been cited over 1000 times and more than 60 over 100 times.

The Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris is proud to host 11th to 13th December 2017 an international conference to celebrate Joe Silk’s 75th birthday. This will provide a unique occasion to bring together the world’s top experts in Joe’s topics of interest, in particular his many former students and postdocs who have now become leaders in the fields of Astrophysics and Cosmology.
